Bengals even record, pounce on Steelers
Andy Dalton threw for 280 yards and the tie-breaking touchdown as the Cincinnati Bengals evened their record at 1-1 by beating Pittsburgh 20-10. Giovani Bernard accounted for both Bengals touchdowns, rushing for a seven-yard score in the first quarter before grabbing a 27-yard TD pass from Dalton in the third period. The Steelers had just 44 rushing yards in falling to 0-2.

Safety suspended
Tampa Bay safety Dashon Goldson has been suspended for one game for flagrant and repeat violations of NFL safety rules prohibiting hits to the head and neck area of defenseless players. Goldson was penalized for unnecessary roughness in the second quarter of Sunday’s game against New Orleans for making direct, helmet-to-helmet contact with a defenseless receiver, Darren Sproles. Goldson can’t practice this week nor play in the Buccaneers’ game on Sunday against New England.

Tampa Bay tops Texas
Tampa Bay beat Texas 6-2 last night, giving the Rays a one-game lead over the Rangers in the scramble for the first AL wild-card berth. Wil Myers homered and had three RBIs to support Alex Cobb, who allowed two runs and six hits while striking out 10 in eight innings. The Cleveland Indians lost to Kansas City 7-1, keeping the Indians a half-game behind the Rangers and pulling the Royals within 2 ½ games of Texas.

Pirates tied for the top
Pittsburgh and St. Louis continue to share the NL Central lead after both teams lost last night. Andrew Cashner faced the minimum 27 batters while tossing a one-hitter in San Diego’s 2-0 shutout of the Pirates. The Cardinals were 6-2 losers at Colorado as Wilin Rosario sparked a four-run eighth by supplying the tiebreaking, RBI single.

$10 million up for grabs
Zach Johnson closed with a 6-under-par 65 to win the rain-delayed BMW Championship by two shots over Nick Watney. Johnson now has the No. 4 seed going into Tour Championship, giving him a clear shot at the FedEx Cup and its $10 million prize. Jim Furyk built a two-shot lead with a 10-foot birdie putt on 10, but he played the last eight holes in 2-over and wound up with a 71 to finish alone in third.
