Sculpture removed after naked students’ ‘Wrecking Ball’ parodies

ALLENDALE, Mich. (AP) — University officials at a Michigan school removed a swinging pendulum sculpture resembling a wrecking ball, after videos of students riding it naked surfaced online.

Students at Grand Valley State University protested the decision this week, saying the videos were a harmless prank meant to parody the new Miley Cyrus video for her song “Wrecking Ball.”

In the video Cyrus, 20, swings naked on a wrecking ball while singing.

Grand Valley State removed the sculpture, called a bifilar pendulum, on Tuesday saying it had become a safety concern.

The sculpture was created by artist Dale Eldred in 1973.

The school said it had been considering what to do with the piece before the recent parodies.

News station WVVM-ABC 13 reported the story generated a lot of buzz on Twitter with the hash tags #ReinstallTheBall and #GVSUWreckingBall trending locally.
