A Norfolk-based guided-missile destroyer has left for the Middle East. The U.S.S. Mahan will be in the Persian Gulf and surrounding waters for five months to conduct maritime operations and strengthen partner nations’ maritime capabilities. This is its first deployment since a sailor was shot and killed on board by a civilian gunman, who was later killed by Naval security.
