A permanent museum on the history of our area might be located in the old jail. The jail is located behind the Juvenile and Domestic Relations courthouse off East High Street near Court Square. It was last used in 1974. The Albemarle-Charlottesville Historical Society has been granted permission to raise money for the conversion. Steve Meeks (pictured) of the historical society says the old jail was the site of one of the most famous events of the last century. In 1905, a three-term mayor of Charlottesville was hanged in the exercise yard. There were seven other executions at the jail before the state took over carrying out death penalties.
