A longtime local activist has passed away. Jane Foster died July 3rd at age 89. Area leaders recognized Foster’s enduring efforts as a community bridge builder in 2003. That’s when her name was added to the Drewary Brown Bridge along West Main Street. City Councilwoman Kristin Szakos was one of Foster’s admirers. Szakos has recalled Foster braving the elements for more than 100 Fridays in a row as part of the local campaign for a living wage. Foster led tours of the downtown area for the Albemarle-Charlottesville Historical Society. Her husband, the late Gene Foster, made headlines in the late 1990’s with his DNA research that linked Thomas Jefferson with the descendants of Monticello slave Sally Hemings.
