Local Task Force Releases Study On Youth Gang Activity

A task force on local gang activity estimates there are more than 180 younger residents of the city and county who are active members of these groups. The gangs that attract the most members are Bloods or Crips. Those names are familiar to people who have lived in larger metropolitan areas. The Gang Reduction through Active Community Engagement Committee found most gang members live on the south side or in the central neighborhoods of Charlottesville, along with the northern urban ring of Albemarle County. The authors of the 120-page report say 70% of the gang members are African-American. They also believe 480 of the nearly 15,000 crimes committed in Charlottesville and Albemarle between January 2010 and September of last year were the result of gang activity.
