Governor Vetoes Amendment Preventing Medicaid Expansion

Governor McAuliffe says he will veto an amendment to the state budget that prevents Medicaid expansion. McAuliffe says he will sign the rest of the two-year spending plan, but he will use a line-item veto to take funding away from the Medicaid Innovation and Reform Commission, or MIRC. The governor calls it a sham. He says his Secretary of Health and Human Resources must come up with a plan by September 1st to expand Medicaid eligibility in the state. McAuliffe says General Assembly Republicans refused to compromise, turned their backs on Virginians who need health care and forfeited millions of federal dollars. Republican leaders responded by issuing a statement, part of which reads “The Governor’s attempt to usurp the constitutionally proscribed powers of the legislative branch is a dangerous threat to the rule of law, separation of powers, and foundation of representative democracy that we simply cannot allow. We are prepared to challenge this blatant executive overreach through all available avenues, including the court system.” McAuliffe also vetoed money for remodeling the General Assembly Building. He says the expense can’t be justified.

Bono had another surgery to repair a fracture to his left pinkie on Monday. Lorich says Bono will need therapy but a full recovery is expected.

Bono is a launching an all-star campaign featuring "once-in-a-lifetime experiences" like walking the red carpet with Meryl Streep or visiting the "Game of Thrones" set.
