Dayna Awkard has pleaded guilty to one count of embezzlement. Awkard is a onetime employee of the Albemarle Clerk of Circuit Court who took nearly $14,000 over a five-year period. Henrico County prosecutor David Stock handled the case to avoid any potential conflicts of interest. Stock says the crime is serious, and he believes Awkard should serve time in prison. He says, “it’s been the view of the Commonwealth throughout this entire thing, once it was determined that there was a criminal fraud situation going on, that we intend to ask that Ms. Awkard be incarcerated.” Awkard worked in the clerk’s office for more than two decades, but she resigned when rumors surfaced she was taking cash under the table. She will be sentenced October 24th.
