Equipment Failure In Augusta Left Many Without Power

Many Virginians, including some in Albemarle and Nelson, lost electricity for most of the daylight hours of Saturday. There was an equipment failure and fire at around 7 a.m. Saturday at the Dooms substation that Dominion Virginia Power operates in Augusta County.  At one point the problems with transmission equipment north of Waynesboro left 32,000 people shivering in the dark.  Service was restored by late Saturday afternoon. The equipment failure knocked off the power to 13,000 customers of the Central Virginia Electric and other co-ops. It affected the Midway area south of I-64 in Albemarle and the Nellysford, Afton and Shipman communities in Nelson. Roughly 19,000 Dominion customers in the Waynesboro and Staunton area also lost service for much of Saturday.
