The Staunton-Augusta-Waynesboro Metropolitan Planning Organization will take new bids to restore the Claudius Crozet Blue Ridge Tunnel. The first round of bids exceeded the $750,000 that’s been earmarked for the project. Phase one is construction of a new trailhead along with parking on the tunnel’s east side.
The tunnel was just half an inch shy of a perfect alignment when it was created on Christmas Day 1856, and was the longest in the U.S.
