The Virginia baseball team begins postseason play on Thursday (May 22) when it competes in the 2014 ACC Baseball Championship at NewBridge Bank Park in Greensboro, North Carolina. The No. 3 seed in the field, Virginia (43-11, 22-8 ACC) will play No. 6 seed Maryland at 11 a.m. Thursday. Coverage Begins at 10:30 on WINA.
The tournament features 10 teams this year and gets underway Tuesday with a pair of play-in games. The winners of the play-in games advance to the pool-play tournament, which is set up with two pools of four teams playing a round-robin format, with the two pool winners advancing to the championship game on Sunday.
Under the pool-play format, each team will play one game against each of the other three opponents in its pool Wednesday through Saturday (May 21-24). The two teams with the best records within their respective pools will advance to the title game on Sunday (May 25), with the winner earning the ACC’s automatic berth into the NCAA tournament.
Virginia and Maryland are joined in Pool B by No. 2 seed Florida State and the winner of the play-in game between No. 7 seed North Carolina and No. 10 seed NC State. UNC and NC State will face off at 11 a.m. Tuesday, with the winner advancing to pool play.
Virginia will face the UNC-NC State winner at 7 p.m. Friday and Florida State at 7 p.m. Saturday.
