Albemarle Supervisors Approve Budget For Public Hearing

Albemarle Supervisors Approve Budget For Public Hearing

Some Albemarle residents have told county supervisors it’s a mistake to raise the property tax rate. One senior citizen on a fixed income says higher property tax bills would mean a real hardship for her. She spoke after the supervisors voted 4-2 to advertise a new budget that’s built on a higher tax rate. The new spending plan is based on a rate of 80.8 cents for every $100 of assessed value. Jane Dittmar and Ken Boyd oppose using that figure.  County resident Nancy Carpenter (pictured) urged the supervisors to find more money for Charlottesville Area Transit. The revenue from the proposed new rate means an additional $3.4 million for the Albemarle schools, but it still leaves a $2.4 million hole in Superintendent Pam Moran’s funding request. The county can also afford two additional police officers, and supplement the salaries of lawyers who work in the public defender’s office. The supervisors will hold a public hearing on April 8th.
