As you’re heading to Virginia Beach on I-64 in the summer, you’ve probably asked yourself this question while east of Richmond: why don’t they add another lane to handle all of the traffic? That’s exactly what the state hopes to do, although it’s several years off. Federal officials have approved an environmental impact statement for a planned widening of I-64 between Richmond and Hampton. Governor McDonnell says the Federal Highway Administration action is a critical step. The state plans to eventually widen 75 miles of I-64 east of the capital city. The governor says parts of it will be widened as the money becomes available. There’s now about $100 million to widen five miles of I-64 in Newport News.
