Western Bypass Supporters, Opponents Let Voices Be Heard

Area residents have told VDOT representatives how they view the latest options for the southern part of the Route 29 western bypass. Elly Tucker, who’s an Albemarle County resident and a longtime critic of the project, characterizes what VDOT is doing as a bait-and-switch technique. Neil Williamson of the Free Enterprise Forum says the latest designs for the southern terminus will make it a more modern roadway. Both supporters and opponents are waiting for a federal agency to decide whether the project needs another environmental review. A poster (pictured) that was created by bypass critics was prominently displayed Thursday outside the Holiday Inn on Emmet Street. VDOT is encouraging area residents to send in their written comments by a June 3rd deadline.
