Dear Colleagues,

When one is totally absorbed in doing what one loves, fourteen years pass in an instant. Serving as president of this great university has been the most demanding and yet the most exhilarating and fulfilling experience of my life–from the exuberance at the beginning of the fall semester to the elation at commencement and every single day in between.

Each day, I am inspired and awed by your creativity, dedication, and brilliance.

Because of you, our university and our students are thriving. Together, we now have achieved most of the goals that I set out during my inauguration speech in 2000, and we have also seized opportunities as they arose to advance the strategic goals of the university. At all times, we have been guided by the overarching goal to provide the highest quality educational experience for our students.

Together, we have shaped the modern vision for the land-grant tradition. Our solid commitment to service and strong spirit of community sets Virginia Tech apart. We are one of the nation’s top universities and have a growing international reputation. In this era of constrained state resources, we have made great strides to advance the university on many fronts, attracting ever-brighter students and esteemed faculty, expanding our graduate offerings, significantly growing the research portfolio, building many much-needed facilities, and addressing the issues of our age. And together, we laid the groundwork for the “Plan for a New Horizon” that will guide the university’s future.

Today, I write to share with you my plans to step down as the 15th president of Virginia Tech. The Board of Visitors is beginning the search process, and I am confident that with the fine caliber of leadership on the board, they will select an individual well-suited to our unique organization. I will continue to serve as president until my successor begins work.

This university and our students have been my passion for more than four decades, and I have great optimism for the future. The promise of this university eclipses all the challenges. We are inventing the future. We have an indomitable spirit. We have the entrepreneurial culture, the creativity, the ability to leverage our strengths, and the willingness to take calculated risks that sets us apart from other universities and enables us move forward. We have tremendous students, faculty, staff, and alumni. It has been an honor and a privilege to lead this dynamic university as its president. Together, we have accomplished so very much over the years, and I am fortunate to have had this treasured opportunity. Thank you.
With appreciation,
Charles
