The University of Virginia has formally welcomed its Class of 2017. President Teresa Sullivan spoke to more than 3500 first-year students Sunday evening in the shadow of the Rotunda. Sullivan also offered advice to parents during a Saturday event in the Old Cabell Hall Auditorium. She shared what she’s learned about saying goodbye to recent high school grads who are making the transition to being college students. Sullivan sees a downside to being a so-called helicopter parent, who often hovers over his or her kids. UVA has also continued a tradition of adorning the outer walls of student dorms with names that are inspired by popular culture. The Metcalf Dorm (pictured) has been labeled “Magical Mystery Metcalf”, which is something UVA parents who are Beatle fans would have appreciated in the 1967-’68 academic year. Metcalf is attached to Lefevre House, which also has a banner that was inspired by the Fab Four. It proclaims “All You Need Is Lefevre.” Metcalf was also the dorm where actress and author Tina Fey lived during the 1988-’89 school year.
