The University of Virginia is amending its procedures to protect the social security numbers of students. The numbers are no longer being downloaded in a central database on Grounds. The modified security policy is the first phase of UVA’s response to the discovery earlier this summer that insurance brochures were sent to nearly 19,000 students that contained social security numbers along with addresses. The mailing list included many of the newest Wahoos (pictured). The UVA Board of Visitors learned more about the amended security provisions as part of a summer retreat.
