One of the University of Virginia’s high-profile alumni is heading west after running the third largest department of the federal government. Homeland Security chief Janet Napolitano (pictured during a visit to UVA’s North Grounds) has ended her more than four-year stint in D.C. to manage the University of California system. Napolitano has told USA Today managing the Homeland Security Deoartment was a 24 hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week responsibility. She’s a former Attorney General of Arizona, and won that state’s 2002 and 2006 contests for Governor. Napolitano walked the Lawn in May 1983 with other UVA-educated lawyers.
