Now that UVA Football practice has begun, there are tons of questions involving the offensive side of the football. The most obvious one is quarterback, where Mike London and Steve Fairchild have both said they will name a starter early in camp. However there is another competition that should be very interesting, and that is at running back. Former North Carolina state player of the year Kevin Parks is expected to be the every down back and receive 20 plus carries per game. While that may be what the perception is going into camp, there is the unknown factor of Virginia’s first five star recruit since 2005. Taquan “Smoke” Mizell is garnering a lot of attention at Virginia Football practice. His reported time of a 4.37 forty yard dash gives Virginia an added dynamic of speed in the backfield. Mike London has also mentioned his potential as a kick returner. London discussed his new offensive weapon yesterday. ” He’s a very talented young man and now he’ll get a chance to get out here and do his thing. There will be some offense and defensive elements and also some kicking game elements. We’re gonna try to get him infused into our offense and special teams early on. He’s grasped the system, and appreciates the role that he can have in being a contributor to this team.” Our Luke Neer of WINA Sports asked Kevin Parks about Mizell’s progress. ” Ah man, kids gonna do great, I want people to watch out for number 4 kid is amazing. Right now he’s picking up on a lot of things that I don’t think most freshman would get, [things] not even I got freshman year. He was very attentive in the summer when we were working out, he wants to learn. He listens and that is gonna be big for him and our team.” For all the latest on UVA Football, listen to the Best Seat In The House, weeknights at 6pm on WINA.
