UVA celebrates completing another academic year

More than 30,000 University of Virginia students, parents and faculty members packed themselves onto the Lawn Sunday for the school’s Final Exercises. Former U.S. Senator Jim Webb (D-Falls Church) is not a UVA graduate but he presented a long list of citizen-soldiers who went to school here. Webb’s examples include former Senator John Warner (R-Alexandria), who served in both the Navy and the Marine Corps.

Webb also admires soldier-turned-President Andrew Jackson even though Thomas Jefferson was one of Jackson’s critics. Many of UVA’s newest alumni brought colorful balloons (pictured) to the Lawn. They promoted an assortment of cartoon characters such as the Tasmanian Devil, the Little Mermaid and Winnie The Pooh.
