Albemarle does not allow paid firefighters to donate their time to volunteer fire companies. Some local residents say that’s ridiculous, especially since it is permitted in other counties. Tom Loach says his Crozet neighbors don’t understand why firefighters from other localities can serve as volunteers with the Crozet, Scottsville and North Garden volunteer companies, but those with Albemarle Fire & Rescue can’t. Tim Kersley, the chief of the Scottsville volunteers has lost some of his firefighters to Albemarle Fire & Rescue. Kersley says his staff put the time in to train them, but his department now can’t benefit from that training. Kersley and Loach, along with Crozet Volunteer Fire Chief Preston Gentry, brought their concerns to the Albemarle supervisors earlier this week.
