An organization that’s been highly critical of the University of Virginia’s Board of Visitors is voicing guarded optimism about the future. The American Association of University Professors welcomes a pending change in the board’s leadership. George Keith Martin of Richmond will become the new Rector on July 1st. Outgoing Rector Helen Dragas (pictured) has chaired her last meeting, but she will remain on the board through 2016. Education School Professor Walt Heinicke heads the UVA chapter of the AAUP. His group wants to see if Martin and the new board will do a beter job of sharing the governance of UVA with the faculty. The organization vehemently opposed Dragas’ actions during a June 2012 attempt to oust President Teresa Sullivan.
