Preservation group gets involved in bypass debate

A statewide group is going to bat for the Jesse Scott Sammons farmstead in Albemarle County.  “Preservation Virginia” has added the African-American family cemetery to its list of endangered sites.  The graveyard is in the path of the proposed western bypass.  Erica Caple James is an MIT professor who wants the Federal Highway Administration to spare the same property.

VDOT has said it will try to avoid the cemetery when drawing a final path for the western bypass (pictured are signs from a past debate).
