The University of North Carolina Athletic Department has had its fair share of time in the spotlight in the past few years. While some of it has been for National Championships and ACC Titles, the vast majority has been for the athletic and academic scandals surrounding their programs.
In a story that is still developing, P.J. Hairston, a junior guard on the UNC Basketball team, was arrested in early June for driving without a license and possession of marijuana. A weapon was also found just outside the vehicle.
USA Today reports that the rental car he was driving at the time was paid for by Haydn Thomas, who has allegedly interacted with various Carolina and Duke athletes via twitter. At this point there has been no statement on whether the contents inside the vehicle were his, and no statement on how the NCAA, UNC, or Head Coach Roy Williams, will be responding.
Dave Glenn, writer for ACCsports.com, joined us on The Best Seat in the House, to discuss the recent Carolina scandals, and how this issue will affect the basketball program under Roy Williams. Glenn explains, “[Roy Williams] has fought tooth and nail when anybody tried to describe either the football scandal or the academic scandal…as a basketball issue”. While Williams has remained silent throughout the unfolding of this story, Glenn remarks, “If P.J. Hairston did as many things wrong as it appears, I think Roy Williams is going to be an even bigger problem for P.J. Hairston than the NCAA”.
