There are major developments in a local mystery that began 27 years ago. The remains of long ago University of Virginia graduate student Patrick Donald Collins were identified earlier this year. They were discovered near New York’s Lake Champlain in June 1988, but no one knew whose they were until August. Collins was a UVA grad student during the 1985-’86 academic year, and vanished in the spring of 1986. Hawes Spencer, formerly of the Hook, wrote a recent story about the Collins case in the Albany, New York weekly “Metroland.” Collins’ mother and stepfather, who live in California, made many trips to this area looking for information about the missing student. There is still no explanation for how Collins got from the city’s Belmont neighborhood to an area that’s a short distance from Canada.
