McDonnell Signs School Safety Legislation

Governor McDonnell has signed new school and campus safety legislation. The 12 new laws include the legal definition of “bullying,” a requirement that every superintendent establish a violence prevention committee and threat assessment team, and a mandate that school divisions designate an emergency manager to coordinate school preparedness. Schools are also required to conduct a lockdown drill once per semester, and juvenile law enforcement records must be shared by the principal with the threat assessment teams. Civil immunity is granted to anybody reporting that someone poses a credible danger on school property.
