A onetime leader of the Democratic National Committee will be Virginia’s next governor. Terry McAuliffe has defeated Republican Ken Cuccinelli in the closest race for the Governor’s Mansion (pictured) since 1989. That was the year Democrat Doug Wilder narrowly defeated Republican Marshall Coleman. McAuliffe will become Virginia’s 72nd governor in mid-January. He carried Charlottesville, Albemarle, Nelson, Staunton, and Harrisonburg. Cuccinelli was the top vote-getter in Fluvanna, Greene, Madison, Orange, Louisa, Buckingham, Augusta, and Rockingham.
