Mark Bernardino is retiring as the University of Virginia’s head swimming and diving coach. Bernardino (pictured) has held the position since the late 1970’s, and his association with the Cavalier swimming program began when he was a student 41 years ago. The retiring Bernardino described Monday as a difficult day filled with mixed emotions and he did not come to this decision lightly. He goes on to say “This job and this University, along with my family, have been my life and my passion for nearly as long as I can remember. But I come to this decision with confidence in the future.”” Earlier this year, both the Cavalier men’s and women’s programs won ACC championships for the sixth consecutive season. It marked the first time the feat has been accomplished by an ACC school.
