A big change in healthcare coverage for many UVA employees. It affects the wives or husbands who work elsewhere and can get health insurance through their employer. Starting January 1st, spouses who have access to coverage through their own employer will no longer be eligible for coverage under UVA’s plan. It does not affect anybody who cannot get coverage elsewhere, and there’s no change for coverage of children. The University blames rising medical costs, higher expenses from high-dollar claims, and looming fees and taxes connected with federal healthcare reform. UVA officials say if no changes were made to address the impact of the Affordable Care Act, employee premiums would increase up to 13%. Also, dental coverage will be separated from the health plan, and the period for signing up or making changes has been moved from November to October.
