Local Jobless Rate Up In May

There was a big increase in the local jobless rate in May, but it’s not unusual for this time of year. The figure for the Charlottesville region was 5% in May compared to 4.1% in April. Ann Lang of the Virginia Employment Commission says students are the main reason for the increase. The Charlottesville area still had the second lowest rate in the Commonwealth, and Lang says it has the 38th lowest reading in the nation. The¬†statewide jobless rate in May was 5.6% compared to 5% in April.
