House Okays Pay For Furloughed Federal Workers When Impasse Is Over

The U.S. House of Representatives has approved providing back pay to 800,000 furloughed government workers as soon as the current budget impasse is over. Eric Cantor (pictured) of Henrico County, who’s the House Majority Leader, is urging the Democrats who control the Senate and President Obama to work with his chamber to end the stalemate. You can hear Cantor’s remarks by clicking on the button at the bottom of this article. Roughly half of the furloughed civilian workers are Defense Department employees and they are being told to come back to work. Pentagon Secretary Chuck Hagel says he’s basing his directive on an interpretation of a law called the Pay Our Military Act. It cleared both houses of Congress and got the President’s signature last month.
