Federal prosecutors have heard from Governor McDonnell and the First Lady. The McDonnells’ lawyers spent hours in court trying to persuade the U.S. Attorney’s Office that in exchange for accepting gifts and loans from a campaign donor, no favors were given in return. The governor’s response to reporters’ questions about the investigation was basically, “no comment.”. The “Washington Post” reports that prosecutors would like to make a decision before Labor Day, when the race to determine McDonnell’s successor in Richmond gets into full gear.
