A former Vice-Mayor believes it might be a bad idea for council members to endorse non-incumbent candidates. Holly Edwards (pictured) has told the current councilors she’s examined what happened during the last two election cycles. That includes the endorsement of Colette Blount by Dave Norris before the Democrats’ August 2011 firehouse primary, and Vice-Mayor Kristin Szakos’ backing of Wes Bellamy before this year’s Democratic primary. Edwards was the most recent African-American who served on the council, before her retirement in December 2011. She also wants the current council to research some trends that trouble her. For example, Edwards says the infant mortality rate in the black community is too high.
