County Officer Cleared In Afton Shooting Death

An Albemarle Police officer has been cleared in connection with the shooting death on Afton Mountain. Commonwealth’s Attorney Denise Lunsford says she will not press charges against Officer James Larkin in the June 8th shooting death of 21-year-old Gregory A. Rosson, Jr. of Crozet. County Police responded at around 3 a.m. June 8th to 9049 Rockfish Gap Turnpike after receiving a call from Rosson’s mother stating that Rosson was beating and choking his girlfriend. Lunsford says Officer Larkin repeatedly told Rosson to stop, and then Rosson charged at Larkin who then fired shots. Lunsford says Larkin was entitled to act in self-defense, and that Larkin had a reasonable fear of death or serious bodily injury. Lunsford says no charges will be brought against Larkin and her office will not attempt to obtain indictments.
