Councilors React To April Ordeal For UVA Undergrad

Members of City Council and the Rutherford Institute are reacting to a recent ordeal for a University of Virginia student.    ABC agents arrested the student when they believed her crate of sparkling water was beer.    Vice-Mayor Kristin Szakos (pictured) discussed the young woman’s plight during Monday’s City Council meeting.   Szakos notes there have been instances where criminals have posed as members of law enforcement agencies and terrorized women.   City Manager Maurice Jones says the Charlottesville Police had nothing to do with the April 11th incident outside a grocery store in the Barracks Road Shopping Center.    State ABC agents have the same power to arrest someone that a police officer employs.    John Whitehead of the Rutherford Institute has urged the City Council to investigate what he calls an unwarranted raid.   Whitehead has urged the councilors to condemn overly aggressive tactics by those in law enforcement.
