Council To Vote On Same-Sex Benefits Proposal

City Council will vote October 7th on a proposal that lets employees in same-sex relationships get the same benefits as married heterosexual couples. Councilor Dave Norris believes the constitutional amendment that Virginia voters approved in 2006 is discriminatory. Norris told City Attorney Craig Brown that he would support a subsidy for gay employees who cannot currently qualify for health insurance family plans. Brown reminded the councilors that the Virginia constitution prohibits gay and lesbian marriages. (Listen to Brown and Norris)
