Virginia will play VCU tonight at 7pm at the John Paul Jones Arena, coverage tonight on WINA will begin at 6:30 with “Cavalier Courtside”. Tony Bennett has built his program on defense, and that philosophy will be tested tonight against one of the more athletic front court players in Juvante Reddic. Tony Bennett is definitely aware of the challenge Reddic presents for his front court players like Tobey, Mitchell, and Gill. ” He’s good, he’s big, he’s powerful, he scores…anytime you play against good teams but specifically good players, it’s all about making them earn and trying not to give em easy ones. Guys like him they works so hard for post position they get good angles….and they can kinda quick strike. Our ability to have to make him make tough shots, that’s a formula that doesn’t change.”
Bennett and Smart worked together on the US U19 Gold Medal national team this summer. The two have had the teams scrimmage before, and according to Bennett, have been trying to put a series together for a while. “We looked at playing this early when I got the job and it didn’t work out. We’ve just tried to play good teams locally, really good teams in the area and so this one obviously is a natural. Just worked out in the schedule and we decided to do it.” It’s a tough early test for the Hoos before they hit the road Saturday for a noon test at Davidson.
