Auto issues were the top complaint for 2012, according to the Consumer Federation of America. Spokeswoman Susan Grant says false advertising for new and used cars, and towing disputes were major problems for many consumers. The federation collected reports from agencies across the nation, including Virginia, to compile a top 10 list of consumer complaints. Problems with home-improvement projects, banks and utilities also made the list. The Virginia attorney general’s office reports the worst consumer problem involved Dominion Management Services, which does business as CashPoint, and made high-interest loans to consumers who used their vehicles as collateral. Grant said Virginians who are still coping with a recession or other economic troubles are often victims of scams.
