The man who leads the Air Force ROTC at the University of Virginia led our area’s largest Veterans Day observance. Colonel Stephen Hiss notes we have been celebrating November 11th ever since Staunton native Woodrow Wilson was America’s Commander in Chief in 1918. Hiss also saluted various wartime heroes with ties to our area, including Admiral William “Bull” Halsey, who enrolled at UVA in 1899. The local American Legion post honored veterans who have been members of the organization for more than 50 years. Veterans’ groups also provided memorial wreaths (pictured) at the nTelos Pavilion.
