Emails between aides to Governor McDonnell and Star Scientific show the Governor told company CEO Jonnie Williams to pitch his supplement to a top health official. Health and Human Services Secretary Bill Hazel says he met with Williams for about an hour in early November 2010. Williams pitched his company’s dietary supplement as a way to cut Virginians’ health care costs and benefit the state tobacco industry. Williams’ assistant says the Governor told Williams to speak to Hazel about the product. Authorities are investigating whether the Governor used his office to promote Star Scientific’s product in exchange for thousands of dollars in undisclosed gifts from Williams to McDonnell’s family.
