Highland County, Virginia — Highland County, “Virginia’s Switzerland,” will celebrate an annual tradition of maple-syrup making at the 56th annual Highland Maple Festival on the weekends of March 8-9 & 15-16. The festival draws tens of thousands of visitors each year and was designated a Local Legacy by the Library of Congress in 1999.

Farmers in this rural community welcome visitors every second and third weekends of March to tour their “sugar camps” while observing the maple syrup process from tree-tapping to bottling the finished product. Festival highlights include all-you-can-eat pancakes and buckwheat breakfasts, maple doughnuts, locally harvested rainbow trout, arts & craft show, live bluegrass bands, clogging demonstrations, and Civil War living history experience that showcases Highland County’s Battle of McDowell.

The Highland Maple festival, located in the mountains of Virginia’s Western Highlands, provides a unique insight to a vanishing way of rural American life.

For more information or photos on the 56th annual Highland Maple Festival, contact the Highland Chamber of Commerce at (540) 468-2550, or visit the Chamber’s website at www.highlandcounty.org.
