UVA’s Secondary Attrition Continues
UVA’s Secondary Attrition Continues

The Virginia Football team had it’s issues this past Saturday in a 59-10 loss to Clemson.  One of the most notable challenges was in the secondary, which is missing to two starting cornerbacks in Maurice Canady and Demetrius Nicholson.  Yesterday Mike London announced that Nicholson would not return this season.  ” First of all, I’d like to mention that we’ve been talking about particular players that might be back and when they may be back.  I do know one for sure, the status, and that’s Demetrius Nicholson.  After doctors looking at his turf toe injury and after bringing a specialist in and conferring with Tre’, it’s been decided that this is probably  it for him this year.  It’s non‑surgical in terms of what they need to get corrected or where he needs to be in terms of them releasing him, but it’s in his best interest right now not to play.  He’ll be in a foot cast or a boot and they say for a while.  It’s unfortunate.  Tre’ has started 30 games for us since his true freshman year.  He wants to come back.  But in conferring with our team doctors and specialists, we were afforded the opportunity to have a look at him – we just decided it was not in his best interest to return this year. ”

So with the status of Canady still undetermined, UVA will have to rely on Brandon Phelps moving over from safety, and true freshman Tim Harris as well as Drequan Hoskey in the secondary.  Thus, pressure up front will be key for Virginia against North Carolina this weekend, due to depth and size the UNC has at receiver.  Let the chess match begin….coverage of Virginia and North Carolina will begin at 10am Saturday on Newsradio 1070 WINA.
